How to pay for a lactation consultant
You deserve accessible and affordable lactation care. And for the most part, it’s covered by insurance. But that doesn’t always mean it’s easy to figure out. I’m committed to making the payment process as seamless as possible.
Paying for a lactation consult with insurance
Under the Affordable Care Act, most health insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling — including visits with a lactation consultant — at no cost to you.
That’s because breastfeeding is considered preventive care, with proven benefits for both parent and baby. While coverage details can vary by plan, many families are eligible for full or partial reimbursement for lactation services, even when the provider is out-of-network.
If you’re interested in learning if lactation support is covered by your insurance, I recommend calling your provider (this is a great job for your partner!) and asking:
Do you cover lactation consults with an out-of-network IBCLC?
If yes, how many visits are covered?
What documentation do I need to submit for reimbursement?
Step 1: Determine how you’ll pay
Aetna, United Healthcare,
& Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois
The Mom BFF is covered by Aetna, United, and BCBSIL through The Lactation Network (TLN). TLN is a third-party service that handles billing for IBCLCs. To check your eligibility and get pre-approved for a visit (or several!) with me, follow the button below to fill out a quick form.
Cigna via
Wildflower Health
Cigna partners with Wildflower Health, an in-network service that connects families with trusted perinatal care providers. There are no additional co-pays or deductibles for members. Check your eligibility using The Mom BFF’s official Wildflower Health portal below.
Self-pay, insurance reimbursement, & HSA/FSA
I don’t bill insurance directly, but I’ll provide a superbill for you to submit for potential reimbursement. I accept Apple Pay, Zelle, and Venmo and payment is due at time of service. If you have any questions, I’m always happy to help you troubleshoot.
Step 2: Book your appointment
Once you’ve determined your eligibility, you’re free to schedule your appointment in The Mom BFF’s online portal. Please note, there is an optional intake form to fill out. Don’t fret if you can’t get around to it.
Give the gift of The Mom BFF
Want to win the baby shower? Give a pregnant parent the gift of lactation education and care. I’ll send a digital gift card for you to give to the new parent, so you can help them make sure they get breastfeeding off on the right boob foot.
Physical gift certificates available upon request.
